i agree with Kyle and Dinesh. The number of references depends upon your target journal and is mentioned in the journal's 'instructions to authors' section in print as well as online. It is usually between 20-25. In review articles it is around 35-40.
Usually 20 to 25 references give a reasonable research on the topic.
However if the topic requires a detailed reference list upto 50 is a good list.
Many journals specify to refrain from citing more than 50 relevant references.
It is not just the number but the quality of the reference also matters. An original article should have at least ten quality references.
