At the University of Central Missouri, we are doing some research on the use of social media by outlaw motorcycle gangs. We had found these groups using facebook, instagram, twitter, snapchat and other social media. These mediums are used not only for social purposes but to communicate or recruit. We would be interested if anyone has observed this trend among their country's criminal groups.
In my country there a lot of criminal groups that doing many activities to make the overall people behavior against the government and most of these group sharing posts on facebook to make the people angry.
I have not observed any organized crime groups in Poland using social media. However I would like to mention that social media are used by ciriminal circles ( eg. Nazis, members of motorcycle clubs ), which I understand as a social back-up for organised crime gropus.
Social media as a channel of the communication for organised crime gropus are not effective as comes to counter-detection. Tomasz you are right. Many outlaw motorcycle gangs have put access controls, such as members only sections, on their websites or facebook pages in an attempt to thwart law enforcement. They do not seem to be are careful on Instagram, Snapchat or Twitter, at least for now.
