I am in need of high-end field recording equipment (acoustic monitoring), but do not have a source of institutional funds as an independent worker. I am considering a crowd-funding option. Is there already something like this serving the research community? Alternately, maybe some kind of cost-sharing program where equipment could be transferred to others willing to help pay for it (over $2000 in this particular case) at project's end could be a unique option. This question just exploratory at this point. Any ideas?

Another approach is to investigate Ebay.
You could get quality acoustic equipment many years ago and old equipment is on sale at affordable price on Ebay.
You would not find yourself in bad company. One university lab I know have received unspecified funding and is allowed to purchase equipment off Ebay and they can do things this way they cannot achieve using regular funding approaches.
It does take more effort, skill and time but, you can achieve marvelous things on a limited budget if you put your mind to it.
To exemplify, here is a top notch outdoor GRAS microphone. It is a little bit special as it is intended to monitor airport noise and therefore, has it directional characteristics adapted for this purpose. It likely is good for loads of other uses. Also, you can always make an offer that fits your budget
