I am mainly interested in the epistemology of electronic media, mainly things that people refer to as news. New outlets and social media have the capacity change posts or remove them entirely and sometimes in real time. This is radically different from print, radio, and broadcast media, even podcasts which are completed statements and often locked in an immutable form. The notion of dealing in post-historical time, because the rules of history do not apply. A key concept that I am interested in is that of alternative facts" and its utilization in political discourse and spreading even into scientific discourse.
I have not studied this on social media or news messages, but on comments on news messages. That should be published later this year. I am however strongly interested in doing the same on social media postings too. I do not think there are currently tools available that allow you to trace these changes (or at least that is the answer I got from Twitter), but they can be build of course :-). However, approval will be required from the platform you want to observe.
Thank you Iris Steenhout. The technical tools for tracking actual changes may provide some form of control or check upon the issue of access. I am primarily interested in how people access information and "lose it" from the experience of trying to utilize the information it and retrieve it. Some of the variables that I am familiar with are operator error, inability to (re)open media, changes in location, removal by administrators, and censorship purposes.
