I need pure (well - realtively not perfectly pure) solid-state samples for calibration of LIBS. Does anybody have any idea if one can get such free samples? I need samples of elements not compounds, alloys, etc.
Providers of electronics used to distribute free samples of their ICs to gain popularity - so I came to idea that maybe providers of material samples may do the same.
I've had success simply by asking companies used to dealing with industrial volumes to send small samples. I was quite up front about them being for scientific purposes and that I wouldn't be placing any orders, but that didn't seem to bother them! The last company I approached said they couldn't charge me for anything less than half a tonne, so they'd stick a couple of hundred grams in an envelope the very next day free of charge. Unfortunately, I've only dealt in compounds so can't give you specific suppliers for elements. Hope that's useful anyway.
What excatly are your geometry requirementsand waht are the quantities we are talking about? - We produce alloys from raw materials by plasma-beam melting, use a lot of CP metals (commercially pure, puritiy between 99,5 and 99,9%, pieces, sponge, pallets, ...), e.g. Al, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ni, Ti ... and might be able to help you.
Geometry does not play an important role in this case. Simply need small quantities in form of tiles or foils or even chunks of materials with diameters from a part of centimeter to several centimeters.
I just focus a laser beam to a spot of a part of milimeter in diameter on the sample and observe plasma in front of it.
If you could help with your materials it would be really great!
