Has anyone had meaningful success in applying Genetic Algorithms for time optimal control in conjunction with Pontryagin's minimum principle for relatively complex dynamic systems? Pontryagin's minimum principle usually leads to a bang-bang solution for control constrained (inequality constraint) time optimal control. The challenge is that relatively simple problems are noted in text book with analytical solutions. Problems including many DOF and several control variables require an approximate solution. In many cases, designers use a Linear Quadratic Regulator which incorporates the control constraint within the Lagrangian which leads to "sub-optimal" results and for some stringent problems low performance.
