The equipment works akin to a flow cytometer that detects phycobilin in cyanobacterial cells and then it takes a photo for identification (the manufacturers claim it can ID up to species level using 30 parameters but I have yet to read a paper on that).

The instrument capture the cells pictures pass through the flow cell. considering the size of the flow cell and the rate of pump, the number of cells per volume of culture is calculated. It also calculate the average cell diameter and is very useful tool for researchers in this field. For more detail refer to the following article.
