i have heard that climate can force one inside, then cause you to need to entertain yourself, and this can cause you to develop a strong mind

i would subscribe to an argument for a correlation between strong mind and innovation

also, climate can create (extreme) necessity, and necessity normally leads to innovation.

further to this, climate can influence demographics, and demographics can influence innovation through factors like critical mass/ concentration - population density/ competition.

Thanks for your comments. Can we say that 'there seems to be a link of the 'climate' as a variable to some other socio-economic variable/s (economic prosperity) which when unite enhance the innovation in an ecosystem'?

There are seemingly two things happening - first, is climate is attracting intellectuals (a migratory phenomenon) that eventually has led to accumulation of intellectual density at some places more than other places resulting in higher innovation output e.g. Silicon Valley (rank:3) or Shenzhen (rank:2) or Tel Aviv (rank:22). Second, is climate is somehow inducing intellectual curiosity in the population that resides in some specific locations thereby enhancing the innovation output of that place e.g. Stockholm (rank:24) or Helsinki (rank:34) or Copenhagen (rank:39) or Tokyo (rank:1).... but we dont know the power of climate as driver in these different high innovation clusters, eventhough the data shows some relationships between a range of low temperature places and high innovation activity at certain places. Possibly climate is acting as DV in some while IV in other places? the impact of climate is different in developed cities/clusters (high GDP) than in under-developed cities/cluster (low GDP) due to strong complementary affects by certain other variables (resulting in dominance or suppression of the climate variable)?

Our history as humans is driven by important scientific and technological discoveries. The discovery of fire and tools brought us out of the forest. The switch from hunting and gathering cultures to agricultural societies set the stage for an explosion of innovative growth. And nobody can argue with the fact that the enlightenment, the industrial revolution, and now the information and digital age have all dramatically changed the way we interact with one another and with society in general. But countless other innovations have also paved the way for progress. It is not an understatement to say that humans can almost be defined by their unstoppable creativity and innovation.

The essence of the climate change problem is that if current trends continue, future global emissions of greenhouse gases will grow significantly in coming decades in response to growth in world population, economic development, and other factors that increase GHG emissions.

Innovation has had a profound impact on our human civilization. And while the types and varieties of these innovations may constantly change, the fact remains that as humans, we are driven to push boundaries and alter the way we interact with the world around us. Now,one of the potential causes of innovation suggests implications that are truly global in nature.

These scientific discoveries and technological innovations have prevented and cured disease. They have enabled us to produce food more efficiently. They have helped us take care of increasing populations with rising life expectancy rates, and they have helped the world become more inter-connected.

The prevailing notion when it comes to this multitude of innovations is that they are the result of moments of inspiration that come “out of the blue”. Others may say that they are 99 per cent perspiration and one per cent inspiration. But wherever our inspiration comes from, it is surprising to find that these discoveries don’t follow a consistent pattern. Instead, we see long periods of relative stability followed by sudden surges and advancement. And these advances vary across cultures and time.

Climatic change has often been associated with economic pressures and resource scarcity. For instance, it has resulted in impeded crops, increased food shortages and famine. Climate change has also been associated with migration, group conflict and warfare. Innovations often result from such external pressures. For a recent example of this, we don’t have to look far. A technologically brilliant strengthening of coastal defences through an innovative systems of dams and storm surge barriers.

Binay Kumar thanks a lot for sharing your interesting perspective... surely climate change has played a role historically and will not cease to force innovation in all aspects of human development. The impact of both artificially induced and natural climate change has somehow affected the survival instincts of humans and triggered the innovation rendering thought processes. It seems like climate variable may induce direct or indirect impact on humans to innovate?!
