The flag leaf probably does not contribute as much to yield as some of the other upper canopy leaves. It is a function of leaf angle and leaf area as to how many leaves are capturing light and where on the photosynthesis light response curve those 2 attributes place the leaves. And then there is the added complication of how this changes as plant densities change.
In maize also flag leaf contributes more towards photosynthesis. since, the flag leaf is directly exposed to sun light than other leaves, so it will add more through photosynthesis.
Since the lateral leaves are more braoader then the flag leaf and they can capture more sun light due to their more area and anfle so lateral leaves may contribute more than the flag leaf
