We are currently setting up a young researcher group on human migration, translocality and resilience here at the University of Bonn. Inter alia our aim is to establish a data management system, which allows us to archive, manage our data, and make the data available for science. We came across the Dataverse Network from Harvard University (http://thedata.org/). Does anybody has experiences with it and can give us a short evaluation? Or does anybody know similar systems and software?
Wow. I had no idea. I had been looking at Dryad, but this seems like a more well-thought out solution. I am impressed. I like the fact you can control access to your data, as this is one of the problems that people with long-term, proprietary datasets have. This Dataverse Network solves this problem and outlines how to achieve this flexibility very well.
That said, I have not used this, but I am going to for a big project I'm starting. Originally, when I read your work, I wondered why you wouldn't be using Movebank.org, started by Wikelski and colleagues. It has a nice graphical representation but it always seemed a bit superficial to me. The Dataverse might be the solution.
According to my impression, there are not so many research teams jet using the Dataverse Network. We finaly decided to give it a try. As soon as we get started and gathered some first experiences I will give you some feed-back on our experiences.
