I think activated charcol may reduce load of toxins (by adsorption) that have gain access in rumen through food chain, and thus it may protect rumen microflora from toxic effects.

I think it may act as substrate for nucleation of dissolved CO2 in rumen liquor which will help in proper rumen function. This is what I realized from some of the earlier discussions in research gate itself.
