Many times researchers visit or stay at communities seeking answers for many questions. But do we care to go back to them with details of our findings? I think when we fail to do that aren't we simply short-changing communities. What is your view and experience?
Many thanks Ivo for sharing your fantastic experience in East Timor. I think it is important for us as researchers to accommodate those myths as part of indigenous and local knowledge.

From my vast background of working in communities in several countries, I am constantly reminded about the wealth of information that communities bring to the projects in which they participate. It is imperative that the cultural values, traditions and customs frame the interactions with the community. Having said this, sharing your findings is a powerful way of ensuring that communities are truly empowered. It is also one way of checking validity of findings. How you interpret these findings may not always match with the answers the community may come up with. In my experience, given that you follow ethical practice, communities are very appreciative of the fact that you have taken them into your confidence to consult with them. There are various ways of sharing findings with them. I have found using the workshop method to be very valuable, as it also forms part of the research methodology whereby you incorporate the feedback from the dissemination of the findings into the write up. This process resonates with the Research and Development (R&D) design.

I think it is ethical and reasonable to go back to the community with findings from your research studies. This is more so as most community members may be keen to find out how their participation in your study added values to their community. This constitute good level of scientific integrity and a good way of adding robustness to your findings.
