I remember one of my teachers in school who was always laughing and he used to give us hints about the subject he were discussing by using funny expressions.

We all loved him, cause we were laughing and learning at the same time.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the segment of the day as teachers read to the class out loud; these teachers made reading come alive as they read.  Their passion for reading was unmistakable and contagious!

However, the one who was the most effective was in my first year in college over three decades ago. It was a technical course designed to improve comprehension and move to an optimal reading speed, which varies depending on what we were reading. It was an experimental course without credit and taught by a professor who devoted her life as a scholar to reading.  As I recall my reading speed and comprehension in the beginning were typical of a college student back then. Our class typically read a bit faster than the rate at which we spoke and our comprehension was in the twenties as a percent. Almost all of us read more or less at one speed regardless of the material.  

By the end of the course all of us were able to read at more than 700 words per minute (e.g., on non technical material) when we wanted and comprehension was consistently above 75 percent for each of us.  More than anything it taught me to focus and to read at an optimal speed.  I suspect some students struggle in subjects like economics, and especially in math and science because they try to read some technical material too fast.

It changed my life.  As an undergraduate, I did not avoid courses with extensive reading and in graduate school it helped even more especially in quantitative courses.  I doubt that I would not be a professor in a math and economics department now without that teacher and course.
