If you haven't already, have a read of Lalrinliana and Kanagaraj (2008) 'SHGs and Tribal Development in Mizoram', which focuses on a a state in Northeast India. It interested me to find that self help groups (SHGs) are being perceived as vehicles for development and empowerment in such areas of the third world.
It carries positive and negative consequences but in one way it is inevitable and as such there should be a selective approach to using what is good and beware of the not good for the context of the respective area. Challenges are going to remain and its an ongoing process of assimilation and living.
