Your question is not clear as you are not giving any information on the historical building. In this case it is difficult to give you a proper advice.
I can tell you that I have developed retrofitting designs for several historical buildings and for these cases I have used created by me seismic isolation technologies. Such an approach permits to significantly decrease the seismic forces acting on the buildings (about three times) and, therefore, there is no need to increase the size of foundation.
