I agree with what Abedallatif and Wellington commented. It really depends on your application and targeted industry. Thus far, most organisations use softwares to look for patterns from raw data collected from sensors (iot) and convert into useful information but not really for machine learning purposes. Not all industries have really unlocked the value of iot. Strategically implement machine learning in service of business goals is complex due to various critical factors. In my opinion, data mining is more applicable for now but machine learning (AI) will be the future.
You can't compare these two terms. Each one has its importance, its field and finally its mechanisms to be correctly applied. I can't give here more explanations, it is so vast discussion.
It depends on the application. In fact, they are interpenetrant fields with different foci, since many machine learning applications tend to use data mining approaches in some stage, in order to discover information useful for supervised learning, for instance. Furthermore, many data mining algorithms employ supervised and mostly unsupervised machine learning methods.

I believe, from my point of view, having a well-round knowledge in data mining would lead to huge success in machine learning as both of them seem to be extremely correlated. So, if you have time to look through data mining first, it is well done job. then employ the acquired data mining based acknowledgment and expertise in strengthening your interest in machine learning.
