I work for an organisation and as part of a research project, I am collecting unanalysed survey data. In order to reduce bias and because of the ethical remit, I cannot collect the data myself. Would this still be regarded as secondary data in this instance?
The first question I would ask is: who paid for the work? They are the owners and can/should decide what to do with it. The intellectual properties belong to the ones who made the experimental design.
I would seek (written) approval from both sides - if possible - before starting any work.
Then if you work with the original raw data, which have not been analysed before in any other way, I would consider it to be primary data.
Be aware that working on the data from an experiment which you have not designed yourself, is generally not easy as you are not really familiar with the design or even do not agree with it totally.
Many thanks for that advice. The organisation that I work for actually designed the survey used with its clients; however, the data collated have not been analysed and as such, is raw data. I did seek permission before taking it upon myself to do this project.
What was not clear was the distinction between primary and secondary data in this context and I needed to clarify this to myself. Indeed, because the survey was not designed myself it does raise the question about its validity within my research study but I have taken steps to take this into account already.
In reporting, make it clear that other people designed the study and collected the data. Give them the credit they deserve!
Leave no room for misunderstanding for who did what, as this might turn against you if you don't.
C.A. (Kees) Kan has said it all. In addition, this also applies to the use of any information in your research projects. Always give credit to whom its due, state clearly who did what, don't overlook any contribution or information.
