since you asked for personal opinions, starting with a negative one: Certainly not in the context of anything whose description contains the word "smart". Much things become uselessly smart these days ... ;-)

If at all, it should be something including feedback control (not just sampling of data), and it should be something excitingly new (to boldly go where no man has gone before :-) . Like: Sending a CubeSat to another planet, and there setting free a bunch of nano satellites in a low orbit, forming a well distributed swarm in order to collect data which are gathered by the CubeSat and transmitted back to earth. Oops, that might be even beyond "global".

In fact, rather on a hobbyist level, I find campaigns like this one exciting, even if they will lead only 250 km above earth's surface:

Davor Predavec Electromagnetism including circuit design and layout design, embedded programming, and robotics are the topics of my professional life, most of the time on the academic / educational level, seldom in industrial context.

If I ever succeeded in sending a PCB into space, I would, of course, apply my professional knowledge to the task, but I guess here my motivation is rather romantic than scientific.

BTW, disaster management resp. early warning systems which is, as I understand, your field of expertise, are in my opinion good examples for really useful applications of the IoT (in contrast to a toaster which orders fresh bread via the Internet if it discovers that the water content in the present bread is too low) (even if less romantic than space flight ;-) .
