I know the term Co-generation and CHP are similar things. I used the term Co-generation in one of my research papers. However, I got a comment from a reviewer asking for using CHP instead of Co-generation. So I would like to know, is there any difference when the use of those terms in different situations.

In my opinion, the term cogeneration is used in a more general sense, nowadays. Though as par the basic definition, the cogeneration system refers to the one that produces power and usable heat simultaneously from the same source. But as you know in the last two decades, researchers have found out many ways to utilise that usable heat for a different purpose. For instance, if that usable heat is used for driving the vapour absorption refrigeration system then that cogeneration system will be called as combined power and cooling system (CPC). Similarly, that heat also can be used for desalination purpose, clean drinking water, hydrogen gas, etc. Therefore it is prefered nowadays to specify the cogeneration systems.
