I have always had trouble envisioning the Displacement field, Magnetisation Field and whether they are dependant on the generation via moving charged particles and the electromagnetic force or dependant on the medium used and only intensity-adjusted by the electromagnetic force. (i.e. is a field theoretically ever-present in a ferrous coil and "activated" by the motion of electrons or does the movement of electrons cause the field to be generated and the medium has no intrinsic field devoid of electromagnetism.)
Motion of charges produces electromagnetic (EM) waves. A charge produces electric field, but a charge accelerated or decelerated produces EM waves. If the acceleration and deceleration is in a harmonic fashion then the EM waves produced will also be harmonic in nature.
The intensity of the electric or magnetic field depends on the medium surrounding the source of these fields.I think the field produced is actually an effect. I don't think it can be considered as ripples in water caused by a moving object in water.
