Some books can be fully downloaded for free as pdf files, after looking for them through well-known web search engines. Others not, whereas they should be extremely useful. Are there any websites compiling free scientific books ?

Yes, indeed, not one single source, but having a few of them would be a good start.
I found by chance bookzz.org/, where I could download excellent books, but not those I was formerly looking for. I therefore suspect that other websites offer such books for free download.

Hint for search in google: use "скачать" before your inquiry for EXACT book, and may be you find THIS book downloadable from Russan web. Be aware of a lot adv. and Russian language in web interface :[
