So far we have seen that demographic can be treated as moderator and any other construct as an independent. Please suggest us that can we treat demographic characteristics as an independent variable and emotional intelligence as a moderator?
You can indeed, but it would not be a true experiment as independent variables would need manipulating by the experimenter and participants would need random allocation into conditions - both of which would be difficult/impossible with most demographic factors. As demographic variables are typically fixed (e.g. age/gender) and this is the required quality for independent variables however, this would be suitable for non-experimental design research. There are many different ways in which EI moderates various relationships, so this would absolutely be acceptable just as long as the model you develop is theoretically-informed e.g. understanding trait emotional intelligence from a personality framework/perspective.
It is not a problem, you can use as a predictor the demographic variables. For example, we have recently investigated whether ideology has an influence on the interpersonal relationships in firms. We made a quantitative survey and demographic variable was one of our predictors. We took people who grew up after the collapse of the Soviet system and those, who were socialized in Soviet ideological conditions (the tests were made in Germany and Ukraine). As Thomas said, you cannot maniplate such variables but you can try to collect the data in a way that will include people with needed characteristics.
Apart of the problem which Thomas mentioned, there is an additional one - the type of data. Apart of the age and working experience (and some else), the data is usually nominal (nationality, certain social group, certain organizational position). It restricts the number tests you can apply and their power. In our case we could say that there is a significant difference between two groups, but we could not make a prediction such as "the more ideology A the stronger the relationhip B".
The question on what is a moderator/mediator/predictor is not the question of the type of the data, but of the theory you develop or test.
Hi Abishek, you can use demographic variables as Independent variable. But, instead of using EI as moderator, you may find difference in EI level among independent variables using Oneway ANOVA or t test as the case may be.
It is an interesting study to conduct , there are various background studies correlating emotional intelligence with a democratic leadership in the individual as part of the companies.
Therefore there could be a similar study at the macro level in a society or country. correlation emotional intelligence and democracy
