Various reasons have been offered to explain why farmers commit suicide in India, including: floods, drought, debt, use of genetically modified seed, public health, use of lower quantity pesticides due to less investments producing a decreased yield and also government economic policies.
It requires a multi-pronged approach, addressing inputs, production processes, marketing and diversification, All there are parts that are operating in isolation. We need to put all these together into a package and deliver.
By using technology, rational judgement, price regulation, creating proper marketing facilities to sell directly to the customers and by avoiding middlemen we can facilitate to double the income of famers in five years.
Contract farming is one of the economic model that can have high impact to the farmers. Agriculture activities have to be integrated right from up stream to down stream activities for the agriculture activities to be sustained. New technology, R & D couple with marketing strategies and supply chains has to be established.
