On my read ups to ANFIS, I found that it almost always uses Back Propogation Network to minimize error, the only other algorithm apart from that is something called "hybrid" algorithm which based on what I gathered an implementation of gradient descent approximation. Can other error correction algorithms be coupled to an FIS?

I followed up on your link, the ANFIS implementation in it dealt with a different rule based system, i.e, clustering, but the learning itself hasn't changed. It still employed the hybrid algorithm I was talking about. I was hoping to see if other learning algorithms can be coupled to the FIS.

Of course we can be coupled to the FIS other learning algoriths such as Kernel, FWSIRM, Coactive Neuro-FIS, here are attached files describing these different coupling.
