The requirement is to power a wheel chair to climb up a stair. The lever should rotate the wheel in one direction only. So when the lever is pulled back it should rotate freely. The shape of the stair climbing wheel is a lob . As shown in the below fig

@matt. its an award winning design by IIT kanpur. we are doing a step climbing wheel chair using a similar mechanism. thanks for your suggestion, we are considering it as it would be the easiest way
There is also the very simple ratchet mechanism, using a gear and spring-loaded "pawl". I hope you'll post about it once your team decides what to go with!
Try to understand the working of ratchet and paul mechanism, you will get it surely
I think your mechanism will be favor, only when u place the wooden wheel in the front and the normal wheels at the back , to reduce the climbing force just think.
We are using the ratchet mechanism, we have decided. for easiness a readily available ratchet wrench is under consideration.
we cant provide the wooden wheel in front. reason is what you told itself, there wont be much load on the wooden wheels, so the normal wheels having the load will slip or roll once they come into contact . the wooden wheels dont have any provision to hold on to the steps, hence it will slip as well as the other wheel starts rolling down
Ah, using an off-the-shelf ratchet wrench is a smart move! (I hope it can handle the torque.) Best of luck.
