social network model is used mainly to study language maintenance and shift. thus i understand there must be a bilingual society or cases like immigrants and so on. in my case is it okay to study this model in a monolingual society to find the influence of social ties on a sociolinguistic practice between two ares identified in the question. thanks a lot
I am not an expert of this area, although I am currently doing some remotely related work (more into relational networks - not sure if social network here refers to the same thing). My question would be: are there really 'monolingual' societies? I mean, to me the difference between 'multilingual' and 'monolingual' is kind of vague - it's a matter of degree, or at least so it seems to me.
Yes you can do the research in diverse settings of monolingual communication. However, it is best suited in multilingual interaction.
