Can anyone throw some light about the oxidation states of iron in phosphate glass? I mean in which oxidation states iron presents in phosphate glass?
Fe oxidation state in phosphate glasses is highly dependent on concentration and melt conditions. In ppm levels under inert or reducing atmosphere there will be substantial amounts of Fe2+ and absorption in the visible and near IR region at common laser wavelengths. Under oxidizing conditions this can be nearly completely driven to Fe3+ and absorption reduced dramatically.
