There are various behavioural activities of an insect. I wish to convert it to a mathematical representation where I can indicate that the insect prefers to a particular activity after the previous activity.
You might "granulate" the time axis into one-minute slots.
Then Replication 1, for example, would read as R-R-W-W-W-G-G-G-G
Now you could start counting the frequency of "transitions" between the plain states R (resting), W (walking), G (grooming) which would result in a 3x3 matrix.
If you have enough data, you could then proceed to transitions between pairs of activities (RR, RW, WR, RG, GR, WW, WG, GW, GG). A 9x9 matrix.
Etc. I see some additional subtleties there, but that is basically the direction I would follow.
