I am trying to induce insomnia in Wistar rats by sleep-deprivation. The sleep/wake rhythm needs to be monitored, hence sleep monitoring device or band.

Automated determination of wakefulness and sleep in rats based on non-invasively acquired measures of movement and respiratory activity J Neurosci Methods. 2012 Mar 15; 204(2): 276–287.
My advice: to score do not use automated system, do it yourself, make contiunuos 72hs of S-W records (at least) previous 3 days of habituation to the recording system. What do you mean by "band" to measure S-W rhythm?
I monitor rats using EEG recording in both the frontal cortex and hippocampus area. So I can capture different sleep stages (especially REM stage) more accurately. From my experience, rats sleep in 3-4 hr block during the day and the blocks get shorter later in the afternoon. It is easy to distinguish SW and REM sleep from the awake stage. Drowsiness awake or stage 1 sleep is the hardest and it is best to monitor the behaviour (head up and eye close).
