I need to measure rainfall (total mm) over extended periods, in very remote regions. These regions often have little to no network availability and are not easily accessible (distance, time, cost). Cost is also a parameter, as mobile weather stations are too expensive for the quantity of sites I need to monitor.
Could I have some suggestions as to how other researchers have tackled their rainfall measurement problems?
I think the only way is being there, with instruments and modeling mathematically with the data obtained, at least 10 years of data.
Probably, you can apply grid data into your research at first. For measurement, I recommend to use meteorological observed platform equipped with wireless transmission. Thus, you can install the platform at first and maintain it one or two times per year, then continuously receive it in your laptop.
