Arsell Grossman Albert's savior: In 1912, during his engagement in general relativity, Einstein wrote to Grossman: "You must help me in this, otherwise I will be saved." Grossman was a talented scientist in mathematics and a disciplined student. He helped Einstein with insight and high imagination at crucial moments. Legend has it that Einstein often missed class, relying on Grossman's memoirs to pass exams. Einstein was not strong on mathematics. Grossman taught him differential geometry so that Einstein could express his physical insights about the equivalence of inertial and gravitational mass. He then formulated and solved the field equations. Einstein's principle of covariance led to the use of tensors, since Einstein believed that geometrical objects were coordinate free. It is quite well known about their collaboration, i think.
