Dear Bill, very nice material. I recognize some similar competences; we defined "global" while you defined as "engineering". If I understand correctly, your answer also states that being an Engineer (with capital E) does not require directly cross-cultural competences, because all engineers use or should use similar way of thinking. Am I correct?
My firm works on 4 continents and the key competency required by my engineers are the ability to communicate with other engineers whose native language is not English and whose fluency ranges from poor to fair.
Dear Douglas, thank you for your insight. Based on your experience, why other engineers/firms do not invest in improving their English? And, do you think it would be helpful for the engineers in your firm to learn the local language instead?
