Shoaling is staying together for for social reasons such as for foraging advantages, reproduction, predator avoidance, etc. They are schooling if they are swimming together in a coordinated manner for hydrodynamic efficiency.

oh yeah, but my question is: Are there some general characteristics highly conserved in fish schooling?

I would say those ones I listed would be the ones! Usually affiliative and caring behaviour is highly conserved.
