I want to give you some details about my project .
as you know greenhouses plants are crowded ,a robot to pass through paths between them to do some functions needs the height of these plants .
many sensors (IR,ultra sound.....) have serious problems mainly it can be covered by the leaves ,so I think to use image processing to do the detection of height ,but I didn't reach the wanted results till now because off shortage in the algorithm .
are there other methods or types of sensors do the detection and measurements of height effectively in this field ?
any suggestion about the algorithm or another method to do the function properly .?

The easiest way is to separate the vegetation from other objects using VIR wavelength. In addition,to know the height of the plant you need to use the following information about your camera
focal length
distance to object
CCDs pixel size
Knowing this and the highest veg pixel in the image you can do the following
real height = (object pixel height * pixel size * distance)/(focal length)
e.g.
real height = (144* 0.00044*300)/2.5 = 7.6 cm

Some people have been using LEDAR systems with GPS. I think good results have already been obtained using these types of sensors.
