I have seen research about the personality of the teacher affecting learning motivation, but I have not seen research about physical appearance.  Personality might be relevant to body language, i.e. posture and movements in the classroom. Is this within your scope?

Dear David,

Research on attractiveness is plentiful in other contexts such as fashion, advertising, dating web-sights, and of course marketing. I would suggest that you research why these areas use attractiveness (face) the effects on consumers.

Given that information (data) examine what you may feel will work in an educational environment. In this manor you may be able to do some truly groundbreaking theoretical work. On a personal note reflecting on the teachers I have had the more attractive the less I learned. I was more focused on her physical features more than I ever was on the content being delivered.  

You may want to include the above into your research.

Mrs. Dewitt

When I was in 4th grade, I had a music teacher named Mrs. Dewitt. She was very attractive... on the outside. My memory is that she was stunningly lovely. But inside... she was nasty.

Mrs. Dewitt didn’t like me. Maybe because of my brothers, Clay and Giles. I don’t know what Clay did to make her mad, but I know what Giles did.

Giles used to roll his pencils down the gentle slope of his wooden desk. The pencils were octagonal in shape so they made an interesting noise, kind of like a wagon going over the planks of a wooden road, but quieter. Mrs. Dewitt would get made at him and snatch his pencil. But Giles sat next to Connie Kretchmer, who had one of those plastic organizer things in her notebook, inside of which she had dozens more octagonal pencils. She would slip Giles a fresh pencil. A few minutes later, gravity would pull that pencil down his desk again, just loud enough to impinge on the class. And Mrs. Dewitt would be furious and snatch his new pencil.

So she didn’t like me, because she didn’t like my brothers.

When the class got to play some music - and that was rare, even though the room was packed with cool music-making instruments- she never let me play one. I always wanted to play the drums- but Mrs. Dewitt only let the black kids play the drums. She didn’t like black kids, but she let them play the drums.

I remember our big project that we got graded on was a music notebook. You had to cut out pictures of instruments like cellos and French horns and write about them. I didn’t care about cello and French horns- had no reason to. I waited until the last night and did a lousy project.

One day when the bell rang to go home I lined up next to my good friend, the noble Lorin Boggs. We were laughing and jostling each other.

Mrs. Dewitt yelled “Brett, come here! Everyone else can go home.”

For the next 10 minutes or so, Mrs. Dewitt told me what a bad boy I was, and how my brothers were so terrible. As she went on and on, her face red and angry, I felt tears burn in my eyes and slowly roll down my cheeks. I sobbed once or twice. Then she let me go.

When I got home that afternoon, Mom could tell something was wrong with me. It took her awhile for me to tell her- I felt so embarrassed and didn’t want Mom to have it out with Mrs. Dewitt. But I eventually told her.

Then next day, Mom picked me up from school in our pink ╒56 Buick Roadmaster. She turned to me and said “Wait here, Bretty. I’m going to have a talk with Mrs. Dewitt.” I was scared. My mother was also a beautiful woman, but her beauty was inside and out. I thought that if she confronted Mrs. Dewitt, the witch would hurt my mother. As the minutes dragged by, I became more frightened. Finally, Mom walked out of the school and towards the car. She got in her seat and looked over at me.

Bretty, Mrs. Dewitt will never bother you again.

She was right. The sad part is that I started to test Mom’s words. As the year wore on I acted out more and more, but Mrs. Dewitt didn’t say a word. I knew it wasn’t right, but I reveled in the fact that Mom had said something to her that made her leave me alone. She would not look at me, would not call on me. That was fine. Eventually, I got bored and quit being such a troublemaker.

I wonder what Mom said to her and wish she were alive so I could ask her.

After reading these responses and advice, I can't help thinking that it would be very difficult to approach this topic without seriously considering issues of gender.

thnk you all for helping. I'm no finish with analysis of around twenty studies about this topic. Seems like that there is a positive influence on evaluation results by teachers attractiveness, in which 50% of attractiveness comes from face (espeacially symmetry) and the other 50% from the body, a little bit stronger if students are female and teachers are male. But it is not clear if this is a kind of rating bias or a consequence of a higher teaching quality of more attractive teachers. I think that would be one of my primary questions in reasearch.
