does the no of graded layers have any effect on the resultant FGM or is it the width or thickness of each layer more important
if i want to design an FGM of 10mm with strength bearing ability varying from 200N at one end to almost 80GPa at the other...firstly how many layers do i need for smooth transition and of what thickness would be sufficient? (if i want to used ZrO2/Ti/HA)

I am uncertain whether this is helpful, but innumerable natural materials use the concepts of FGMs to design in specific functions and properties. You might wish to look at these natural examples before you design the optimal graded biomaterial for your biomedical or dental applications.

Hi,
It all depends on the final applicaiton. If you want to fabricate cortical or cancellous bone, soft tissue or any other hard tissue, the gradients should mimic bone and the materials natural or synthetic plays a pivotal role in determining the characteristics you want to achieve.
The concept of using a composite of zirconia, titanium and HA is interesting. However bear in mind the fabrication technique you want to follow as well.
