My experience with geology informs me that geology tends to be conservative in its thinking and not to be especially innovative but to adhere to the prevailing line. This is not to critisize geologists because the earth is very complex and gingerly gives up its secrets. The last big innovative advance in geology of which I am aware occurred in the 1960's when continental drift was recognized and there followed the development of plate tectonics.
