There are some books covering the history of computer science or artificial intelligence, but I can't find any detailed presentation on how NLP (and computational linguistics) evolved from the very beginning. Any suggestions?
I did find information on the first machine translation project in Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach. I don'r know of any dedicated books though.
Depending on how far back you want to go, Jean Sammet's 1969 Programming Languages: History and Fundamentals has sections on the first dedicated string processing languages (COMIT, SNOBOL). The book also has sections on special purpose languages, some of which appear to have been implemented as language focused AI experiments - they may perhaps be interesting for the history and development of NLP.
