I am currently working on a manuscript for submission to an American Physiological Society (APS) journal (American Journal of Physiology: Regulatory, Integrative and Comparative Physiology). I am using Mendeley (Ver. 1.19.8) for MacBook Pro (Ver. 11.3.1) and importing references to Microsoft Word (Ver. 16.49) and am encountering an issue with how it’s structuring the in-text citations and reference list for the APS reference style.

The issue I am having is that in-text citations are listed in alphabetical order, rather than serially [i.e. my first in-text reference is (112) because the author’s surname starts with Z, rather than (1)].

I reached out to the APS and they referred me to their recent update and it seems to work perfectly for them, but the problem persists on my document. I have troubleshooted several other ways: deleting and re-installing the APS style, un-installing and re-installing the Mendeley plug-in for Word, signing in and out of my Mendeley account, and even deleting and re-installing Mendeley.

Has anyone encountered this issue with the recent format update and successfully troubleshooted it?
