The average mud cracks areas that we see are within centimeters range and those produced in glass Petri-dishes are within millimeters range and similarly, playa lakes that have the soil depths of more than 50 meters have desiccation cracks areas within hundreds of meters range. The relationship between soil depth and the average area of desiccation cracks have been consistently reported in the literature. I am working to develop an index for depth of soil deposits and average desiccation cracks. All suggestions (literature citing, methodologies, best approaches, and thoughtful questions) in this regard are welcomed.

You also need to consider the type and vertical distribution of the clay minerals.. Even within the smectites there are variations in potential shrink- swell
